Removing Invalid Entries from Boot Selection Menu
A common problem after reinstalling XP is the appearance of a boot screen asking the user to select the copy of XP that is to be loaded, even when there is only one copy of XP on the system. The traditional method of removing the invalid entry is to manually edit the boot.ini file, but XP provides an alternative method that eliminates the danger of manual editing by using the System Configuration Utility.
To Remove the Invalid Entry

Click Start > Run

In the Open: line type "msconfig"
and click OK to open the System Configuration Utility -
Select the tab labeled BOOT.INI

Click the button labeled Check All Boot Paths

A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating system locations.

Confirm you want to remove the entry and reboot the system.
