Configuring Windows XP to Login Automatically

After downloading updates from the Microsoft "Windows Update" page or via the Automatic Updates, your computer may no longer log into your account automatically. This is usually caused by the .NET Framework Update. When installing, it creates an additional user account called ASP.NET. You don't need to remove this update or delete this account to reactivate automatic login. You can configure Windows XP to automatically login again using the following method:

  1. Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, then click Ok

Select the user account you want to automatically logon to from the list.

Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option, and click Ok.

Type the user account password and complete the process.

For users with Windows XP Home, don't try to auto-login as the built-in Administrator, as you will receive a restrictions error.
